DETOXIFICATION – what is it, and why is it important?
It is rather amazing to find many people don’t believe, or
even understand the benefits of detoxification. So many others do not even
know exactly what it means to detoxify. A few friends spoken to in the past
believed they were getting a detox whenever they took something which gave
them frequent bowel movements. So that meant eating fruits for some people and eating large portions of cooked beans for some others. Interesting perspectives which I actually find amusing!
So what is a Detox?
In simple terms,
detoxifying is cleansing our body i.e. our internal systems, our visceral
organs. As a culture we are very aware of our external cleanliness. We brush
our teeth and take a shower daily – make that twice daily for some
of us. We wash our hair daily or every other day and we like to look and
smell clean because it makes us feel better. Similar to detoxification only this time, we are cleansing our insides - liver, kidney, intestines etc. The problem is that it’s often
hard to know when our internal cleansing mechanisms are not functioning well.
Unlike other parts of our body it is very hard to know how well our liver is
working, and our liver is the main detoxification organ.
But why do we need to do
this?
Look, what are we
eating? Natural, organic foods are hard to come by and are poised to move even
farther away from our dining tables with the advent of Genetically Modified
or GM foods. According to a report in The Guardian July 17, 2014, the DG, National Agricultural Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Prof. Lucy Ogadu, the Federal Government has put in place necessary regulatory guidelines to fast track the adoption of Genetically Modified Organisms (crops) (GMO) in our dear country.
Very soon some of the crops displayed in our markets would've never seen the soil. A travesty in waiting.
How about what we’re
drinking? Carbonated soft-drinks laden with unnatural sugars. Some are even 'cool' enough to display “CAUTION:
Contains Aspertame” right on their bottles! But do we even notice them? Nope, we guzzle them right down! Make una dey carry-go!!
Look around, the air we
breathe is polluted. Industrialization makes sure of this. Made a trip to
your village lately? You almost wish you could bag the freshness in the air
on your way back. And yet some ignorant people knock Fashola for his efforts at re-establishing our greens??
The medications we take
have side effects. Anyone checked on the label of Procold
recently?? You’d be shocked at the litany of possible side-effects. Ditto most pharmaceutical drugs.
And what results are we
getting?
Obesity, Cancer, and all
other manner of illnesses, disorders.....And then, the rich fly to the UK, Germany, Saudi, India or
wherever it is they feel they can get the best medicare while the poor, oh
well, turn to God for miracles. Such tragedy!
The truth
is, toxins build up in the body whether you believe it or not.
To many,
this would appear to be basic knowledge, but given that for some people this
is the very beginning of their health journey, they may never have given it a
single thought before.
I guess a
lot of us don’t stop and take notice or start to make health enquiries, until
something goes wrong with our health, and that my friend is sadly human
nature. But we must take responsibility and care for ourselves, as good health is
there for all of us if we strive for it.
Detoxification is what your body does naturally to
neutralize, transform or get rid of unwanted materials a.k.a. toxins. It is a
primary function of the body, constantly working and interacting with all
other functions of the body. So when I am talking about detoxification, it is
about improving and optimizing the function of your body’s own detoxification
systems. This is done by decreasing the amount of toxins we put into our
bodies while at the same time supporting our body’s detoxification and
elimination systems with the nutrients it needs to function properly.
Although it is mostly ignored by our current medical
system, the detoxification system is a key component of our body’s functioning.
Most of the molecules made by our bodies every day, are for getting rid of
waste products. We need hundreds of enzymes, vitamins and other molecules to
help rid the body of unwanted waste products and chemicals. We need to
manufacture these molecules to help take the good from what we ingest and get
rid of the unwanted. Although the bulk of the work is done by the liver and
the intestinal tract, the kidneys, lungs, lymphatic system and skin are all
involved in this complex detoxification system.
Our Own Personal Chemical Dump
The whole
purpose of doing any type of cleansing or detoxification program is to get
the toxins out of your fat, muscle and blood. Dr. Bernard Jensen, a nutrition
expert with over 60 years of clinical experience, author of some 55 books,
world lecturer, philosopher/humanist has this to say:
“In the
50 years I’ve spent helping people to overcome illness, disability and
disease, it has become crystal clear that poor bowel management lies at the
root of most people’s health problems. When we have toxic substances in the
colon seeping into the body tissues, it’s like having a time release poison
in your bowel. It works slowly, imperceptibly wearing down the vitality,
resistance and health of body tissues and organs.
It’s like
having your own personal chemical dump that we carry around with us all the
time. It’s always working as long as the toxins are present, serving out
their lethal micro doses.
When the
bowel becomes encrusted with non-expelled faecal material due to poor dietary
habits, the absorption of vital nutrients slows down to the degree of
encrustation, the energy cycle is short circuited and a downward spiral of
tissue integrity ensues. Improving the condition of your bowel will give you
worthwhile dividends in renewed health, energy and vitality. It’s an
investment well made. Once the bowel is cleansed of accumulated waste
material, the next step begins.
Giving up
old habits is a very difficult thing for most people but is absolutely
essential to regaining full health. The building process begins when correct,
life-giving attitudes and habits take over. We can regenerate the body when
we have clean tissues that are able to draw all the nutrients and chemical
elements we need from the foods we eat. Coffee and donuts will not do the
job; sugar and white bread won’t either.
If old
habits are not given up, only temporary, ‘flash’ results will be
experienced.”

Let’s
sign off today with quotes from some re-known Medical experts:
“After concluding a 25
year study of over 5,000 cases, every physician should realize that
intestinal toxins are the most important primary causes of many disorders and
health problems of the human body.” - Dr. Anthony Badzier, Professor of
Gastroenterology, NY
“Out of 100,000
autopsies that I had attended, less than 10% of the people had normal colons”
– Dr. Norman Walker (died at the age of 109)
“The colon is the sewer system
of the body, but with neglect and abuse, it becomes a cesspool of toxins that
spill over into the body” – Dr. William Hunter
“Most people are walking around with at
least 7 lbs of fecal matter in their large intestine, and I’ve seen patients
lose that much weight and their stomach bulge, following colon treatment” –
Dr. Jack Lamar
The
colon is a sewerage system, but by neglect and abuse it becomes a cesspool.
When it is clean and normal we are well and happy. Let it stagnate, and it will
distil the poisons of decay, fermentation and putrefaction into the blood,
poisoning the brain and nervous system so that we become mentally depressed and
irritable, it will poison the heart so that we are weak and listless, poisons
the lungs so that the breath is foul, poisons the digestive organs so that we
are distressed and bloated, and poisons the blood so that the skin is sallow
and unhealthy. In short, every organ of the body is poisoned, and we age
prematurely, look and feel old, the joints are still and painful, neuritis,
dull eyes and a sluggish brain overtake us; the pleasure of living is gone.
I hope the following information impresses you with the vital importance of detoxification to you and every member of your family.
Take care of your body, it’s
the only place you have to live.
